Nokia N95 Review

Posted by pragnesh on July 19th, 2007

Actual Photo of Nokia N95Hello Friends, well this is my first topic in here and I am gonna start with reviewing one of the latest and most awaited gizmo of this year, the all new NOKIA N95.I got a chance to play around with this so called mini computer and I assure you guys its quite promising and NOKIA’s claims of N95 being a mini computer arent false anyways,Well as soon as you open the box of this so called mini computer you will see the following things: usb data cable, tv-out cable, 2 piece headset, charger, manual, cd, battery and the n95…. no memory card as stated in the manual (I guess they have started giving memory card along).

THE BUILD, to be honest i wasnt expecting it to be great build quality as its a slider fone…. BUT its so solid, the slide dont wobble 1 tiny bit, the fone itself also feels solid and no creaky parts, the phone isnt much bigger than the n80, and its thinner than N80.FIRST BOOT UP, the n95 starts quicker than n80IE, not by much though, the Nokia tune on start up sounds nice due to the twin speakers, the screen is HUGE, and nice and bright, I installed handy taskman and on a clean boot i have 22.4mb of free RAM, the screen isnt as good as the n80 but it is better than the old 176 x 208 screen.

THE USER INTERFACE (UI), theres 5 new themes, all are very nice, the menu is the same as n80 but u have the option to use annimated icons, they move wen u navigate around the menu, on the main screen the wLAN scanning is there like on n80ie, settings has changed abit, theres now setting options for GENERAL, PHONE, CONNECTION and APPLICATIONS then as u enter each of those settings theres more to truly customise the look of the UI, u can also change font size, SMALL, NORMAL and LARGE, also the themes app has changed abit, in themes u now have GENERAL, MENU VIEW, WALLPAPER and POWER SAVER options, as u enter then u have a host of settings to chose, preinstaled apps are ok, u get zip mannager, adobe, quick office, 3-D tones app bluetooth keybord app, u also get lifeblog, barcode scanner and maps, gps and landmarks, very nice, the multimedia button gives u a nice view of an aragment aff apps that u can choose to add to the multimedia menu, and u can also personalise it with background images etc.The music player is spot on, much better than any nokia music player ive used, it looks so much better, also theres an 8 band equaliser, stereo widening, ballance and loudness options, also u have VISUALIZATIONS as ur music plays, a nice touch IMO, the sound on the built in twin speakers is amazing, its better than the n73 and probably on par with the n91 but with 2 speakers, the gallery looks diferent from the n80 etc, looks much nicer now, u can also set an animation as a screen saver nice, the n95 includes a better keypad lock, it auto locks wen the slide is closed, the alarm is also improved as u can now set multiple allarms and repeat days etc, theres a new video center app that lets u stream and download vids from routers, you tube and nokia.

CAMERA/VIDEO, 1 word summs it up…. GREAT, the cam is fantastic, quite alot of options in image mode, more than any s60 iv seen, auto focus in portrait works great and in macro the auto focus is faultless, takes around 2 seconds to save a pic taken at 5mp,the video recording is very good, even in low light conditions, and the frame rate is graet, the quality is to good to be true from a fone, both image and vid mode use the whole 2.6 screen as a viewfinder, no annoying bars at top or bottom, not tried editing as of yet.TV-OUT, this is a cool feature as it alows u to see ur fone on the big screen, the video that came with the n95 was like viewing a DVD on my tv, however when viewing fones menu etc it isnt as good,DUEL SLIDE, wen u slide it up to use ur keypad its same as any other slider, but wen u slide it down ur multimedia menu opens automaticly, u can choose what u want to do, watch media, stream etc, or just hit play and ur music will start or u can change it so if u press play ur movies start instead, its a great way to listen and watch ur files, the screen rotates in under 1 second, very fast, the 330 mhz ARM CPU works a treat, fast menus etc, i havnt realy used the new browser much so i wont comment on it just yet, there is a few minor bugs, the worse 1 is wifi keeps disconecting every now and then the browser now takes up alot less RAM than on os9.1 handsets, also there now is only the WEB browser, no services browser anymore as the new 1 handels both wap and web.Wifi is working fine, I changed my routers radio chanel to 13 from 6 and my n95 now holds onto the signal, RAM, wen using the new browser i havnt yet had any mem low warnings and iv been browsing all day and using heavy pages like howard forums, the ram stays around 7mb wen using the browser, and if i exit the ram goes bak up to around 19mb, no ram leakage at all.The new v2 safari browser is spot on, it has a search option but for sum reason it dnt have a search for web address option in page, i hope they add this in next FW, the browsers setup options luk a bit dif from the old safari browser but has the same options, browsing is great, its very fast at opening pages, howard only takes around 6 seconds to load the whole forum page, also once ur browsing u have an option to rotate the screen, no need to move the slide to rotate it, also it has clear cache, history, cookies and passwords, u can clear them all at once or individualy, it also has a toolbar… The toolbar has 4 options, recent links, page overview, refresh and search, a nice touch IMO, u can save web feeds or select to save them automaticly, u can also subscribe to feeds etc, it loads images fast and sound, also adobe flash files (adobe flash 7 content only) so no youtube but thats what the vid centre app is for, also the browser auto saves logins/passwords,and if u rotate the screen it uses no extra RAM than in normal mode.

Well I desire to own one of this mini computer soon and thats what I have for now but I shall come back and post with some more updates on N95 and other gizmos.

I am sure that there are plenty of positives out there, but what have you seen for yourself? Sometimes I can’t help but give free reign to my roasted export Do you want a fresh joke from net? What’s the difference between an oral thermometer and a rectal thermometer? The taste.
